Commissioner Denise Grant, City of Lauderhill

On Saturday, May 21, from 7:00am to 10:00am, Commissioner Grant, in conjunction with Dr. Thelma Tennie, LMFT of the Healing Arts Institute of South Florida International, Inc., are offering a free morning “Stretch & Breathe” class at Ilene Lieberman Botanical Gardens (3801 Inverrary Blvd.).

Dr. Tennie was able to partner with Commissioner Grant and provide Stretch & Breathe through The Children’s Services Council of Broward County Healing and Empowering All Living with Trauma (HEAL Trauma) Grant. Dr. Tennie explains, “We were able to attain a four-year $450,000 annual grant, to assist three Broward County cities – Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, and Fort Lauderdale. The focus will be on location community services to address pervasive traumatizing experiences that are common amongst youth and families in historically high poverty, lower socioeconomic levels that are subject to fewer community resources. Services are aimed to combat anxiety, depression, maladaptive thinking patterns, and risk-taking behaviors that are impacting interpersonal relationships, families, and the community. Healing Arts will function as a liaison connecting families with health and social services throughout the community to improve quality by way of increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a variety of outreach and advocacy activities.” The grant will allow Healing Arts Institute to provide yoga, breathing techniques, self-care, positive coping skills, trauma support and emotional intelligence classes. She provides something for everyone to improve overall mental health.

“It is imperative we maintain our health during these times. Stress management is a major component not only of mental health, but physical health. The last few years in particular have been challenging for all of us. I am thrilled to partner with Dr. Tennie to provide some relief to the residents of Lauderhill. I invite all of you to take this time to Stretch and Breathe with me,” exclaims Commissioner Denise D. Grant.

A smoothie bar, healthy snacks, Wes Saunders “Joose” booth and stress management literature will be on site.  Bring a mat if you have one. Please RSVP at Lauderhill-fl.gov/breathe to attend the class. Space is limited.
