In a moving display of compassion and community solidarity, Shernette Levy & Friends hosted a transformative Women’s Day empowerment event in Western Jamaica on Saturday, January 17, welcoming more than 300 women from surrounding communities for a day dedicated to healing, renewal, and hope. The event, A Day of H.E.R.S. (Heal, Empower & Revitalize Spirits), carried the theme “She Rises” and was organized in response to the widespread impact of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that recently devastated parts of the island.
Held at the Manning’s School Grounds, the invitation-only gathering provided a safe and uplifting space for women navigating the emotional and practical challenges left in the hurricane’s wake. For many attendees, the event offered a rare moment to pause, reflect, and connect with others experiencing similar hardships—reminding them they were not alone.
The initiative focused on nurturing the whole woman, addressing mental wellness, physical health, nutrition, social connection, and dignity. Participants benefited from medical screenings, inspirational guest speakers, entertainment, and a hot, nourishing meal. Each woman also received thoughtfully curated “tokens of love,” including hygiene kits, personal care items, gift certificates, and other essentials to help restore confidence and dignity.
The emotional impact of the day was profound. Volunteers and organizers were visibly moved as they witnessed women express heartfelt gratitude for being cared for, celebrated, and uplifted. Many shared that the experience renewed their sense of worth and provided much-needed encouragement during a difficult season.
Adding to the significance of the event was the strong spirit of collaboration. Volunteers traveled from both Jamaica and the United States, embodying the power of diaspora unity and grassroots action in times of crisis.
“This was never just an event—it was a response of love,” said Shernette Levy, founder of the initiative. “After Hurricane Melissa, we saw women carrying the weight of loss, fear, and responsibility for their families. A Day of H.E.R.S. was our way of saying, ‘You are seen. You are valued. You deserve a moment to breathe, to be poured into, and to rise again.’ Watching over 300 women come together and leave with renewed hope reminded us that healing happens when community shows up with heart.”
The program featured a distinguished group of guest speakers who delivered powerful messages centered on resilience, health, justice, and empowerment, including:
- Jessica Davidson, Manning’s School
- Janet Silvera, Chairman, Women of Western Jamaica
- Dr. Taniefa Baharie, OB-GYN
- Dr. Marcia Graham, Ministry of Health
Musical guest Crystal Axe brought an uplifting performance that resonated deeply with attendees, while the effervescent Rosa Young guided participants through a movement and meditation session that encouraged relaxation and emotional release.
More than a Women’s Day observance, A Day of H.E.R.S. stood as a powerful testament to compassion-driven leadership and collective action. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, the event offered light, dignity, and a clear reminder that when women are supported, they rise—and when they rise, entire communities are strengthened.
