The Louise Bennett-Coverley Heritage Council (LBCHC) is giving aspiring novelists and writers an opportunity to explore the craft of fiction writing during “Novel Writing 101: Preparation, Research & Review.”
The free writing workshop takes place on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Preston Allen, an award-winning author and Florida International University English professor, leads the workshop. Allen is a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellow and recipient of the Sonia H. Stone Prize in Fiction. The author of eight books and a three-time AALBC bestseller, Allen has had his fiction published in numerous literary journals and anthologies. His novels All or Nothing and Jesus Boy have also received critical acclaim.
During Novel Writing 101, participants will get practical insight into the essential elements of developing a novel. The workshop will explore the writing process from preparation and research through story development and review, giving participants tools and techniques they can use as they begin or strengthen their own writing projects.
Whether you have already started writing a novel, have an idea you have been carrying around for years, or simply want to better understand what it takes to develop a book-length work of fiction, the workshop provides an opportunity to learn directly from an experienced author and educator.
The event is free, but registration is required, and participants will receive lunch as well as a Certificate of Attendance.
The workshop is part of the Louise Bennett-Coverley Heritage Council’s ongoing commitment to encouraging writers and supporting literary and cultural development in the community. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization presents literary workshops twice each year, providing opportunities for aspiring and established writers to develop their skills and engage with accomplished literary professionals.
