New York, October 9, 2023 – The Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) and the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) are collaborating on a special Jamaica Pro-Am Golf Tournament on October 28 and 29, 2023, in celebration of The University of the West Indies’ 75th anniversary Diamond Jubilee.
Themed “Jamaica Open Celebrates UWI 75”, the tournament features the JGA’s annual Pro-Am on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the world-renowned Tryall Golf and Country Club, Hanover, and “The UWI Break 75 Challenge,” an open event on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the prestigious Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, Montego Bay. The main sponsor of this event will be Deloitte, a leading global audit, consulting, tax, and financial advisory firm. Other sponsors include Springboard Incubators, Caribbean Producers Jamaica, ATL, and Official Ball sponsors On Core Golf.
Dr. Maurice Smith, Registrar of The UWI and Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee noted, “The UWI is marking its 75th with a series of events designed to celebrate the milestone and the scores of persons who have contributed to the university’s success. Throughout the year, we have had several activities across the region, including a Higher Education Forum, a medical conference, and several cultural events. In collaboration with the JGA with sponsorship from Deloitte, this golf tournament is illustrative of the partnerships we have forged with industry leaders which greatly influence student outcomes at The UWI, “Dr Smith explained.
Dr. Cyrus McCalla, Chairman of the New York-based AFUWI, a designated IRS 501(c) 3 charitable non-profit organization, noted, “The AFUWI is fully committed to supporting The UWI and the funds raised by the event will boost our annual scholarship program, providing expanded opportunities for gifted students of modest means. Our Board members, friends and associates from the US and Jamaica, The UWI faculty, staff, and well-wishers are looking forward to playing on the world-famous Tryall and Cinnamon Hill Golf Courses for what is a most worthy cause”.
The AFUWI ‘s fundraising events, including a black-tie awards gala in New York, annually provide funds for scholarships to the UWI in various disciplines to students across The UWI’s landed and virtual campuses.
Celebrated Jamaican golfer Jodi Munn-Barrow, President of the Jamaica Golfers Association, said the organization was “honored to partner with the AFUWI and The UWI to benefit the region’s students. Golf speaks to integrity and teaches humility and patience – excellent lessons for the young. This event will allow amateurs to enjoy playing golf alongside the pros at Tryall.” A welcome delight is having Deloitte as a title sponsor to this year’s activities, a longtime supporter of the UWI campuses and regional initiatives. Deloitte thrives on focusing on capacity building and community development.
Speaking on behalf of Deloitte, Managing Director Colin Duncan referenced the firm’s long history of collaborating with UWI and it phos intent to foster similar initiatives in the Jamaica market. “We hope to explore avenues to support and contribute to student development and share our experiences and knowledge. The JGA has an established track record of hosting top title tournaments, and we look forward to doing our part to support more students having the opportunity to achieve academic excellence at the UWI”, Mr. Duncan said.
