Jamaican-born chef Darian Bryan has officially taken Caribbean culinary excellence to the next level after winning Season 5 of FOX Television’s hit culinary competition series, Next Level Chef.

The Clarendon native secured the championship title, a US$250,000 grand prize, and a coveted one-year mentorship under celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay, Nyesha Arrington, and Richard Blais following an intense 16-episode season that showcased some of North America’s top culinary talent.

Based in Buffalo, New York, the 34-year-old chef proudly represented both Jamaica and Caribbean culture throughout the competition as a member of Team Blais. In the highly anticipated season finale, Bryan competed against Connor Caine of Team Nyesha and Cole Lawson of Team Ramsay in a final culinary showdown that tested creativity, precision, and flavor.

The finalists were tasked with preparing a three-course meal featuring an appetizer, fish course, and meat entrée. Bryan impressed the judges with a masterfully executed menu that included a pepper lobster appetizer, sea bass escovitch, and seared duck breast — dishes that ultimately earned him unanimous praise and secured the victory.

Bryan’s culinary journey began in Clarendon, Jamaica, where he was raised by his mother, Athea Allen, a cookshop entrepreneur, alongside his five sisters, before migrating to the United States in 2012. His Jamaican roots remain at the center of his culinary identity and continue to influence every dish he creates.

“Being Jamaican influences every single thing I do in the kitchen,” Bryan shared in a recent interview. “Jamaican cuisine is built on bold flavors, creativity, resourcefulness, and heart. Growing up in Jamaica taught me how to cook with feeling, not just technique.”

He added, “Whether I’m cooking French cuisine, Italian dishes, Asian-inspired plates, or modern American food, there’s always a piece of Jamaica in it somewhere.”

Chef Bryan is also well known to South Florida food lovers through his appearances at the annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival in Florida, one of the Caribbean community’s premier culinary and cultural celebrations. In 2024, he won the festival’s highly competitive Celebrity Chef Challenge, further cementing his reputation as one of the Caribbean diaspora’s rising culinary stars. Over the years, Bryan has also captivated festival audiences with live culinary demonstrations, showcasing his creativity, technical skill, and passion for Caribbean flavors.

Bryan is an accomplished entrepreneur. Along with his wife Jessica, he owns and operates Bratts Hill, a unique two-concept restaurant in Buffalo that transforms from fast-casual dining during the day into an elevated fine dining experience at night. The couple are also proud parents to their son, Darian Junior, and daughter Nina.

Chef Darian Bryan’s victory marks another major moment for Caribbean representation on the global culinary stage and serves as an inspiration for aspiring chefs across the diaspora.
