LAUDERHILL, FL – The remarkable story of Alexander Bedward, the charismatic Jamaican preacher, social reformer, and anti-colonial leader whose message of faith, justice, and Black empowerment inspired thousands at the turn of the twentieth century, will come to life in Bedward – The Musical at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Originally written by Louis Marriott and directed by Michael Forrest, Bedward – The Musical explores the life, ministry, and movement of Alexander Bedward, leader of the Jamaica Native Baptist Free Church in August Town. Set against the backdrop of colonial Jamaica, the musical chronicles the rise of a man whose bold sermons challenged inequality, inspired hope among the oppressed, and ultimately brought him into conflict with the colonial establishment.
Presented by The Louise Bennett-Coverley Heritage Council and produced by Tallawah Cultural Productions, the play features choreography by Yvonne Jones-Goodridge and musical direction by Dr. Floyd Antonio. The outstanding cast includes Ricky Rowe, Jerome Russell, Malachi Smith, Rev. Horace Ward, Dr. Allan Cunningham, The Jamaican Folk Revue, Phillip Cross, Neville Williams, Nadine Brady-Taylor, and Lena Lawrence.
Audiences will also enjoy a rich musical score featuring traditional gospel hymns and Jamaican folk music, including arrangements by the late Noel Dexter, bringing authenticity and emotional depth to this compelling theatrical experience.
